Can I turn a Google Font into a pixel font?
Yes. Choose one of pixelplease’s bundled Google Fonts, select a weight or style, then adjust the pixel effect and export. The result is a new derivative font; it is not an official pixel edition of the original family.
Make a pixel fontReady-made pixel Google Fonts or a custom treatment?
For a ready-made pixel art font, compare Press Start 2P for an arcade-style look and Silkscreen for compact retro text in regular and bold. These are external alternatives, not entries in pixelplease’s current bundled list. Use them directly if their existing shapes fit; pixelplease is for exploring a custom treatment of another source.
Start with a font you can read clearly at your target size. Compare a simple sans such as Inter or Lato with a serif such as Merriweather. Small counters, delicate serifs and very thin strokes are more likely to disappear on a coarse grid.
Use the same words, weight and preview size when comparing sources. Try OPEN 24/7 - and your real label. The current generator exports Basic Latin (U+0020–U+007E); accented letters and typographic dashes need a different font or a fallback. The real text matters more than one attractive sample letter.
Use the bundled list or upload a licensed file
The Select font mode contains a curated set, not the entire Google Fonts catalogue. It includes Inter, Merriweather, Lato, Roboto Mono and other families listed in the app. The font files are bundled locally with the site; the demo does not need a runtime Google Fonts request.
If the family you need is absent, obtain a static TTF or OTF from its official project, check the license, and use Upload font. A CSS embed URL is not a font file you can drop into the upload zone.
Compare two recipes before choosing one
Make a restrained version with more grid detail, then a coarser version with fewer cells. Adjust threshold to recover or remove edge cells, and add only enough expand to keep thin strokes visible. Compare the counters in e and 8 and the separation of adjacent letters.
This is a comparison method, not a guaranteed preset. Different source metrics can produce different effective grids. The creation guide explains how to refine the result without changing every control at once.
Keep the source license with the derivative
Google Fonts allows commercial use subject to the font’s license. For the bundled OFL fonts, retain the copyright and license files when sharing the font, and respect any Reserved Font Names. PixelPlease-generated family names are deliberately distinct from the source names.
Read the licensing checklist before distributing an export. If you only need an existing ready-made pixel font, choosing one from a font library may be simpler than generating a derivative. Pixelplease is useful when you want to explore a particular source typeface’s pixel treatment.
